What’s your largest hydro hog?

A couple weeks ago we were working on a client’s new home. Built in the eighties, the house was designed with a wood stove and a fireplace. Per the rules of insurance, however a home requires a primary heat source that is able to supply heat to the entire home. Nether a wood stove, nor the insert fulfill this obligation as they are encapsulated in single rooms.
For the previous owner, baseboard heaters were used as the primary heat source. Our client’s choice to install a new propane furnace was enough to save them over half of their hydro bill.
There’s no question that baseboard heaters have their place. They can be very helpful in supplementing the heat in your home or office, but remember to shut them off fully because the dial isn’t enough. The best advice you can get in a world where hydro costs are soaring is to reduce your bill as far as you can. There are simple ways you can accomplish this and there are big wins like this client.
