So how much is your neighbour spending on his Christmas lights anyway?
You may be surprised.
If he’s oldschool and finds the newer LED lights a little dull, then it’s possible he’s spending as much on his lights as you spend a month in Hydro.
A 100 light string of incandescent mini lights uses 40 watts, while a 70 light of 5mm LED string uses 4.8 watts total.
Assuming you remember to shut the lights off during the day and only have them on for 10 hours then the time of use cost of 6.5 cents kw/h would work out to 80 cents per section of incandescents. On the other hand, an LED would be around 10 cents.
It doesn’t seem like much until you think about how many lights you put up at your house. A typical house might have 15 or 16 light strings or decoration equivalents. The neighbour who can be seen from space however is likely using 10 or even 20 times that much power. At as much as $250, he’s spending more on his hydro bill for Christmas, than most would use fora month, maybe even two.
The solution is always LED lights. At almost 10 percent of the usage, you can buy a lot of lights to make up for the difference. And one more tidbit; the LED lights can run off one plug while the incandescent lights will use as many as 6 for the same length.
