We learn at a very young age that we’re supposed to play nice in the sandbox. Unfortunately as we grow older, life pulls us in different directions. When we have our own businesses, we learn how to do things that works for us. Perhaps it’s how we learned it in school or it’s a trick we learned through the decades of employment.
When it comes to the contractors that work on your project however, you want to assemble the right team, people that will work together to accomplish the goals that you have set out. You want smart contractors.
Four elements to consider are:
- Union or non-union – Whether you use a unionized shop or not is your choice, but remember that when you are working on a project, sometimes these two groups don’t work well together. Furthermore, a tradesman who is unionized will be severely punished if they work outside the union.
- Drawings – You need to make sure that everyone can read the drawings properly or you may have water lines where you need electrical outlets.
- Timing – You want to make sure your tear-out crew starts on time so your rough-in and inspection can happen properly. You can’t afford to have tradespeople sitting idle because it can get very expensive.
- Overzealous – Some people can’t slow down. When it comes to the trades, if they don’t slow down then they may end up having to redo their work when the inspector has to check on it. Drywallers are of particular note as they will quickly cover over the work your other crews have finished.
When it comes to working with other trades, you want people who are courteous and knowledgeable. Take the time to find the right team members so you save time and money.
