Rules change over time. Whether it’s the seat belt in your car or the fact that we can’t smoke in restaurants, we are affected in the advancement of safety. One area that has been scrutinized is the electrical in your home. There are several things that have changed over time in an attempt to make it safer for you and your family. The following are the top three things.
1. Wiring
At one time, two wire was sufficient, however with the increased use of insulation in your home and the advent of three pronged cords, knob and tube wiring has been replaced by grounded wiring.
2. Electrical outlets in your kitchen
There was a time when you could use the same electrical boxes in the kitchen as were used in the living room. These days however, ground fault interrupters (GFI) are required close to your sinks so you can be assured a splash of water won’t injure anyone or cause any damage.
3. Fuse panels
There was a time when fuses were sufficient, but as houses grew in size and we added more electronics like televisions and air conditioning, it became necessary to upgrade the system. With breaker panels, you are more protected and can add more to your panel then you could a generation or two ago when your house may have been built.
Safety is important, especially in your home. You want to make sure that the wiring and electrical is done properly, especially if you either have an older home built when they weren’t concerned with a home turning a hundred or if the electrical work was done by the homeowner.
